Trauma
trauma is the sustained response to a distressing or disturbing event, circumstance, or ongoing environment. Such events and environments overwhelm us and extend beyond our abilities to cope. I can help individuals learn techniques and tools, so that you can live a more productive life without sabotaging behaviors and thoughts.
“Art can permeate the very deepest part of us, where no words can exist.”
-Eileen Miller
I use the following interventions for healing:
The effects of psychological trauma and distress can take many forms, and life is often never the same. Diagnosing them is the first step to restoring peace and healing in your life by repairing the way trauma is stored in your brain.
Emotional distress can occur after experiencing or witnessing a single terrifying event like the death of a loved one, or an act of violence. It can also occur after chronic or repeated experiences of psychological, emotional, physical or sexual abuse. Regardless of the nature or frequency of the incident(s), when upsetting things happen to us they can get “stuck” in our minds and we can re-experience them through our daily beliefs, thoughts, emotions, and body sensations.
EMDR
(Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)
EMDR has been around for a number of years. It involves alternating sweeping movements, each lasting no more than a minute, wherein you’ll be invited to express spontaneously whatever comes to the forefront of your consciousness: images, sounds, words, movements, physical sensations. As the cerebral sweeping accelerates, often unexpected associations of ideas and feelings about certain dramatic events, some of no importance, and some of great importance, will come to mind.
The process is similar to the defragmentation of a hard disk inside one’s emotional memory, and then reassembling your library of memories, both conscious and unconscious. The process provides a sensation of tranquility. We’re not throwing out important memories, instead, reorganizing them in a useful way.
Integral Breath Therapy
(Level One)
Integral Breath Therapy refers to the use of breathing techniques in clearing physical, mental and emotional stress. Through childhood, we learn to suppress our emotions by holding tension and restricting breath. As time passes, this becomes automatic and chronic, restricting our range of expression. We even lose the ability to experience positive feelings and positive emotions such as joy and pleasure.
I can help you employ breathing techniques in order to trigger natural purifying of the body and mind, allowing for more deep relaxation and openness, as well as increased oxygen intake, which allows for natural intake and surrender to feel and safely process emotions.
(Ketamine Assisted Therapy)
Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP) is a holistic modality in which ketamine is used as a complement to psychotherapy to help patients experience more frequent breakthroughs and sustained improvement in symptoms. This includes determining eligibility, developing a custom treatment plan, prescribing the medicine and monitoring outcomes.
Studies have shown that the benefits to mood and neurological growth can last up to two weeks after the Ketamine experience. Journey Clinical’s in-house medical team takes on patient eligibility, prescriptions and outcome monitoring, while I take on the therapy. Their collaborative care model is designed to deliver personalized treatment plans to meet your individual needs and improve long-term outcomes.
Art Interventions
Art therapy is adaptable to anyone, regardless of the issues they’re facing. Creating art allows individuals to open up and step back from the work they’ve created to examine things from another perspective, revealing truth, relationship nuances, constructs, and interpretations that words don’t necessarily allow.
Art also provides a place to contain and process pain while opening new doors for expression. It’s a visual language free of inhibitions and obstacles. What’s difficult to express in words, may come more easily through art.
It’s comfort, it’s connection, it’s freedom.
I typically use art in connection with other healing modalities including EMDR, which is known to be one of the most effective therapies for trauma. EMDR allows for information processing, learning, and symptom relief.
Complex Trauma
Complex trauma is something that can happen and often times happens in close relationships where trust and safety should exist. It refers to when there is prolonged, repetitive experiences that can take a toll on the mental and emotional well being of the person involved. With repeated exposure to these events one can develop PTSD and other mental health issues.
I will help with figuring out the best treatment to help you deal with your symptoms and what you are most comfortable with, whether that be EMDR, IBT, or KAP. I also can help with adults or children dealing with C-PTSD and learning how to cope with that through Art Intervention Therapy.
